Galaxy Text Effect

December 14th, 2008

In this tutorial you will use several tools to create a pretty cool effect of text being sucked into a galaxy.

Step 1: Create a new image with whatever dimensions you wish. I personally used 1000 X 1000.
Fill the new image with black.

Step 2:
Use filters > Render > clouds > difference clouds. The defaults are fine.

Step 3:
Then use Colors > Colorize. Use whatever you think will work as a galaxy background. See my example below.

Step 4:
Create a new layer fill with black use Filters > render > noise > HSV Noise. See example below.

Step 5:
Now use Color > Threshold until your left with a reasonable amount of stars left.

Step 6:
Then set layer mode to screen.

Step 7:
Now create a new layer (set opacity to 75%) and using a galaxy brush paint a galaxy left of the middle. A galaxy brush can be found on deviant art. For my example I used a not so galaxy brush that I created.

Step 8:
Create text using a space font. (There is one I recommend on the links page.)

Step 9:
Use the perspective tool and shrink the left side of the text into the galaxy. To add another effect erase part of the first letter so that it fades out.

And youre done. Thanks for reading. And please Comment

Vista Button Tutorial

December 14th, 2008

The Files needed for this tutorial are available here.
In this tutorial you will learn how to create a vista button like the ones that appear on the Vista Log-on page!

Step 1: Create a new image 128 x 28

Step 2: Create a new layer and name it base.

Step 3: Select > All then Select > Shrink 2 Pixels then Select > Rounded Rectangle 10%

Step 4: Fill this selection with Vista Gradient 1. Go from top to bottom when dragging the gradient.

Step 5: Select > Grow by 1 pixel, add a new layer, move this layer under the base layer and fill in the same way as step 4 with Vista Gradient 2.

Step 6: Select > Grow by 1 pixel, add a new layer, move this below the layer we created in step 5 and fill with black. Then set the layer opacity to 70 %

Step 7: Choose the brush tool and pick Circle 19 and set the scale to 3X

Step 8: Alpha to selection the base layer by right clicking it and selecting alpha to selection create a new layer, move it to the top, then use your brush and make a spot like the one shown below.

Step 9: Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur, and set the radius to 50 Pixels

Step 10: Using the rectangle select tool, select the top half of the button and delete. Then set the layer mode to overlay.

Thats it youve created a button just like the one used to switch user on the vista login page. Please comment and tell me your suggestions, comments and
outcomes of this tutorial. Thanks!

Note: If you want to fill it with text I suggest you use Sans Bold with a font size of 16

How to Create a More Pratical Reflection

December 14th, 2008

Most people know how to create a nice reflection using a gradient but there is one problem with that
if you want to change the background where the image is you have to change the image itself so using this
new method you can keep have the image where ever you want and it will still look good!

Step 1: Create a new image what ever size you want but make sure it is double that od the image you wish to reflect.

Step 2: Create a new layer and paste the image you wish to reflect onto it.

Step 3: Duplicate this layer and flip it vertically.

Step 4: Move this layer directly under the first layer.

Step 5: Create a selection halfway over the bottom of the reflected image.

Step 6: Feather Selection by 50px

Step 7: Then delete the selection and lower the layer transparency to 50%

And thats it, simple right? Please leave me a comment and thanks for reading!

Note: Make sure you save it as a gif or jpeg otherwise it won’t be transparent!

Glossy Web Logo

December 14th, 2008

In this tutorial we will learn how to create a cool glossy website logo.

Step 1: Create a new image I created my image with the dimensions 1000X1000 so that
I have a lot of room but you can use whatever size you want.

Step 2: This is an extremely important step. You must find a good font
that looks kind of like Mekanik LET Ultra-Light. You can download that font
here.
Unzip the files and drag them into the font folder in the Gimp program folder.

Step 3: Create your text with the font and make sure it’s in the middle with at least a 100 pixel border around the edges. The size should be adjusted to fit mine was 362. Your text can say anything but the first letter of each word must be capitalized and there must be no spaces this is very important.

(Guides are there to show you the border needed you do not need them)

Step 4: Make sure that the text layer is selected and right-click alpha to selection. This will create a selection around the text. Create a new layer, call it color and fill the selection with whatever color you want. (I used ffa000)

Step 5: Take the magic wand and deselect a word (you can do this by holding down ctrl and clicking each letter), in this case I will deselect Glossy then fill with another color (I used 00d800). Do until each word is a different color. Then go Select - None.

Step 6: Select the original text layer and right-click alpha to selection. Then add a new layer call it black and move it below the Color layer. Grow the selection about 25 pixels by selecting Select - Grow. Fill this selection with black. Then go Select - None.

Step 7: Take the elliptical selection tool and create a selection that cover about half of the word. Shown Below

Step 8: Create a new layer, call it shine and drag it on top of all the later. Then fill with white and set the layer transparency to 20%.

Thats it you can take it where ever you want to now. Thanks for reading and please comment and show me what you came out with thanks again.

Note: If you want to make it on a transparent background first you must alpha to selection the black layer then invert the selection, click the shine layer and delete.
